DESCRIPTION
This workshop can be run at any location as you will be learning about the best settings for the Fujifilm GFX series cameras.
The ‘medium format’ GFX system can be daunting for photographers coming from full frame cameras and even more so for APS-C or Micro 4/3 shooters. Myths like ‘its no better than full frame’, ‘focus stacking is essential due to the tiny depth of field’, ‘the GFX kills your computer’ will be busted and you will learn how to improve your craft in order to fully embrace the GFX user experience. I will explain how to choose the most suitable white balance and ISO, how to use the custom dial settings (GFX 50S II, 100S, 100S II + 100 II), how to handle the huge RAW files, why you don’t need to trawl though pages of menus when on location, GFX specific tricks, hacks and much more.
There are specific techniques required to bring out the 3D ‘I was there’ image quality of the GFX cameras, once you have mastered these, there will be no going back to full frame cameras.
Many people purchase a GFX system as they think it will be ‘the answer’ and make them a better photographer overnight. Once they find that it doesn’t focus as quickly as the Canon or Sony they had before or their images are no better, the GFX quickly gets sold on or exchanged for the next ‘answer’. It is a camera system that gives you back what you are prepared to put in. There is no need to use autofocus for serious landscape photography, so there is no point getting hung up about the focusing speed. You wouldn’t buy any GFX camera if you main subjects are birds in flight. Having said that, I have tried it - click here for my feature about photographing Fulmars with the GFX 100S.
I would recommend areas like the Caithness Coast, Wester Ross, Moray Coast, Glencoe, Cairngorms, Perthshire etc. as all have a good variety of subjects.
The exact itinerary will be based on the areas chosen, time of year and the prevailing weather conditions.
This workshop is limited to a maximum of 3 participants to maximise the potential of each location without overcrowding and also to avoid damaging the habitats.
Suitable for owners of these Fujifilm GFX interchangeable lens cameras, 50S, 50R, 50S II, 100, 100 II, 100S + 100S II (NOT the GFX 100RF or Eterna 55). Filters including a polariser and solid neutral density (ND) filters are essential if you wish to capture long exposures, graduated ND filters are also useful. A tripod is also necessary.
If you don’t yet own a GFX camera, in my opinion the GFX 50S II, 100S, 100S II + 100 II models are the most suitable for landscape work due to the 6 custom dial settings. The GFX 50S II and 100S are also great value on the used market, as are the 3 lenses required for a landscape photography kit. Despite the keen prices now, the GFX 100 is best avoided for landscape photography, mainly because it is huge, heavy and devoid of useful controls. I don’t recommend adapted or third party lenses, the Fujinon GF lenses are specifically designed only for the GFX cameras with no compromises. Due to the design of the GFX sensor stack, you will only get the best performance and user experience by using the GF lenses. Having used Canon ‘L’, Sony ‘G’ + ‘GM’ for many years, I can confirm that the Fujinon GF lenses are better in just about every respect. The GF 20-35mm is proving to be a great lens for night sky photography, the edge performance is far superior to the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G and the FE 24mm f/1.4 GM, previously my astro photography Holy Grail glass.
